CRO Race 2024: Brandon McNulty of UAE Team Emirates has secured a remarkable solo victory. He takes over the overall lead in a weather-affected Stage 3.
The stage initially planned a longer distance from Novi Vinodolski to Opatija. But strong winds forced a reduction of 64.5 km. McNulty made his decisive move 51 km from the finish line. He quickly overtook Kim Heiduk (Ineos Grenadiers), who had attacked earlier.

Despite heavy rain, McNulty built a lead of over a minute against the peloton. That gave him a comfortable cushion for the final stretch. As he entered the closing circuit, he maintained a 40-second gap from a significantly reduced chasing group.  That groups included teams like Ineos Grenadiers and Bahrain Victorious.

McNulty celebrates eighth seasonal victory at CRO Race 2024

Ineos Grenadiers led the pursuit. But they struggled to cut down McNulty’s lead, allowing him to celebrate his eighth victory of the season. McNulty finished 26 seconds ahead of his teammate Igor Arrieta in the chase.

With this victory, McNulty now leads the overall classification by 30 seconds over Giovanni Lonardi (Polti-Kometa). Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) and Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) finished in third and fourth place, respectively.

As the CRO Race 2024 continues, Friday’s stage promises to be the toughest yet. It will feature a 160-kilometer mountainous route that culminates in a summit finish at Labin.

Jerseys awarded in the CRO Race 2024

In the CRO Race 2024, organizers awarded four different jerseys. The general classification calculated each cyclist’s finishing times for every stage. Time bonuses applied for the first three riders at intermediate sprints. There were bonuses of three seconds for first place, two seconds for second, and one second for third.

Additionally, the finish of mass-start stages offered bonuses. The stage winner earned a ten-second bonus, while the second and third riders received six and four seconds, respectively. The leader of the classification wore a red jersey, representing the most prestigious achievement in the CRO Race 2024. Winning this classification meant winning the entire race.

Moreover,  points classification existed, with the leader wearing a blue jersey. Cyclists earned points for finishing in the top 15 of each stage. A rider received 25 points for winning a stage, 20 for second place, and 16 for third. The points decreased down to 1 point for finishing in 15th place.

Points also awarded at intermediate sprints during each stage followed a 5–3–1 scale for the top three riders. Furthermore, these sprints offered bonus seconds towards the general classification. Thus, the CRO Race 2024 presented multiple opportunities for cyclists to excel.
