Rivers State crisis is now “one-week, one trouble.” Consequently, PDP’s former national chairman, Uche Secondus suggests Nyesom Wike, the Minister of FCT, is threatening democracy.

Uche Secondus, the former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has a serious warning. He says that unchecked actions of Nyesom Wike could threaten Nigeria’s democracy. His comment  follows the recent local government elections in Rivers State.

Medialord reports that Wike’s former aide, Chijioke Ihunwo expressed a similar fear, recently. He accused Wike, on Arise TV, of “threatening democracy in Nigeria.”

In fact, Secondus urged the federal government to take action. He claimed Wike aims to undermine democracy. “Only in this country can one person belong to two political parties and cause chaos,” he said.  Secondus advised President Bola Tinubu to recognize Wike’s true nature, describing him as an “unruly bull in a China shop.”

Protecting Rivers State

Secondus emphasized the strategic importance of Rivers State. He encouraged Tinubu to work with Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Together, they could protect critical assets from Wike’s ambitions.

Additionally, Secondus congratulated Rivers State voters for their turnout and resilience. He praised Fubara for standing firm against intimidation. Secondus warned that Nigeria shows signs of a failed democracy. He urged the federal government to be cautious in dealing with figures like Wike.

Reactions to Rivers State crisis

The fallout between Wike and Governor Sim Fubara has attracted criticism from several prominent politicians. Most of the attacks are focused on Wike. For instance, Senator Magnus Abe, a former governorship candidate, recently expressed deep concern. He stated, “Wike’s actions threaten the fragile peace we have worked hard to maintain in Rivers State.” Abe called for unity among party members to ensure effective governance.

Former Governor Peter Odili also weighed in. He stated, “Rivers State needs constructive leadership, not divisive politics.” Odili urged Wike to focus on issues that matter to citizens instead of engaging in petty disputes.

Calls for responsibility

Similarly, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the former National Chairman of the PDP, criticized Wike’s behavior. He remarked, “It is essential for our leaders to act responsibly.” Ayu emphasized that the party cannot thrive if personal disagreements overshadow collective goals.

Senator Olaka Nwogu echoed similar sentiments. He stated, “Wike’s recent actions are unbecoming of a leader.” Nwogu called on Wike to reflect on his approach and prioritize the needs of constituents.

Social Media Sentiment

Public sentiment on social media has also mirrored the political backlash. Many users criticize Wike for attempting to undermine Fubara’s leadership. Comments such as “Wike needs to step back and allow Fubara to lead” gained traction. Overall, the Rivers crisis has ignited widespread concern about leadership and democracy in the state.
