Tragedy struck in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday during a traditional festival. A brutal attack by masked gunmen claimed numerous lives during the Onwa Asaa festival.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the violent incident is suspected to be linked to a cult-related clash. The violent attack left scores dead as chaos erupted during the festival. Eyewitnesses reported a scene of horror as the gunmen indiscriminately fired at people celebrating.
State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Tochukwu Ikenga attributed the violence to disputes between rival cult groups. In response to the tragedy at the festival, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, ordered the deployment of additional police operatives to restore calm.
Ikenga urged witnesses and residents with information about the attack to come forward. He assured them that the police will treat all information confidentially. “The command is working diligently to uncover the full details of the incident,” he stated.
Investigation into tragedy at festival underway
The police emphasized they are making efforts to serve justice. They aim to restore the safety of the community following the tragedy at the festival. The assailants reportedly arrived in a black Lexus SUV and targeted an eatery, opening fire indiscriminately.
At least 10 people were reported dead at the time of this report. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic. “It felt like a war zone. The gunmen just stormed the place and started shooting everywhere,” one witness recounted. People ran for their lives amidst the gunfire, creating absolute chaos.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. Community members are calling for swift action from authorities. “We urge the government to take immediate action. We cannot continue to live in fear,” a local resident lamented.
