Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), has reportedly passed away. Reports said he died in a hospital in the United States. He was 83 years.

General Ibrahim Babangida appointed the professor of political science as NEC Chairman. He served from 1989 to 1993. During his tenure, he conducted Nigeria’s historic June 12, 1993 election. This election is widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history. Chief Moshood Abiola was the presumed winner.

Nwosu’s commission introduced the novel Option A4 voting system and the Open ballot system.

In July 2024, the House of Representatives called on President Bola Tinubu to immortalise Nwosu.

The lawmakers wanted him immortalised for conducting the election adjudged as the freest and most credible in post-independence Nigeria. His death will sure shake the nation as he will be sorely missed.
