The nationwide protests took the Nigeria by storm in August, 2024. Now, some frail looking minors have been arraigned for allegedly participating in the demonstration.

Today, 67 minors who were arrested during the recent nationwide protests faced arraignment in court. The atmosphere was tense as families and supporters gathered, anxiously awaiting updates on the young activists’ fate. The minors appeared frail and visibly distressed, raising concerns among advocates about their treatment while in custody.

During the proceedings, some of the minors fainted, highlighting the harsh conditions they endured since their arrest. Reports indicated that many had spent days in overcrowded facilities, facing inadequate food and lack of proper medical care. Their physical and emotional state served as a stark reminder of the toll these events have taken on them.

The minors were charged with offenses related to public disturbance and unlawful assembly, stemming from their participation in the nationwide protests calling for an end to poor governance. Advocates emphasized that these children were simply exercising their rights to express dissatisfaction with the status quo.

Court grants bail amid tensions over nationwide protests

As the court hearing progressed, legal representatives argued for the immediate release of the minors, pointing out their age and the nature of their involvement in the protests. The tension in the courtroom was palpable, with parents holding their breath in anticipation.

The court ultimately granted bail to each minor, setting the amount at N10 million. While this decision brought a sense of relief, the high bail raised serious concerns about access to justice for families already struggling financially. Many advocates labeled the bail amount as excessive and punitive, especially given the circumstances.

The sight of the frail minors and the distress experienced during the hearing drew attention to the urgent need for reform in how to treat young activists within the legal system. Human rights organizations hailed the bail decision as a right step forward. But they also insisted that government needs  to further protect the rights of youth involved in civic engagement.

Background and broader implications

The nationwide protests that led to the minors’ arrest reflect deep-rooted issues within Nigerian society. The #EndBadGovernance movement has gained momentum as citizens, particularly the youth, demand accountability from their leaders. This surge in activism signifies a growing awareness and desire for change among young Nigerians.

While the future of the minors remains uncertain, their case has sparked critical conversations about governance. Many are also discussing about  the treatment of young activists in Nigeria. The nationwide protests  amplified calls for reform.  But it also brought attention to the resilience of youth who dare to speak out against injustice.
