The underaged protesters, who fainted in court on  Friday during arraignment, merely staged a show for the camera, according to the Nigeria Police. The authorities charged 76 of them with treason, arson, etc.

On Friday, during court proceedings for 76 individuals charged with serious offences, six minors unexpectedly fainted. That drew media attention and wide criticisms from prominent citizens and groups. The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has suggested that the minors staged the incident for media attention.

The ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer issued a statement on Saturday. He stated, “Today (Friday), an unexpected incident in court saw six of the suspects suddenly rush out and faint, drawing media attention in a deliberate and scripted manner to draw negative attention.” The police view this as an attempt to sway public opinion regarding the underaged protesters involved in the legal proceedings.

Adejobi emphasized the NPF’s commitment to the rule of law.  “In managing the detention and arraignment of these suspects, the NPF has rigorously adhered to legal provisions to ensure fairness and accountability under the rule of law.” The police assert that they provided appropriate medical aid to the minors. That reflects their duty of care, regardless of the allegations against the suspects.

Public reaction and police stance.

However, the arraignment of the underaged protestors  provoked mixed reactions from the public. Many question the involvement of minors in such high-stakes protests. Others express concern for their safety. The NPF stresses the need to balance justice with compassion.

“Throughout this process, the Police have worked to balance justice with compassion, ensuring that each suspect’s basic rights and privileges are respected, including access to medical care and other necessary provisions,” Adejobi explained.

He reiterated that all individuals who reach the age of criminal responsibility are accountable for their actions. “Under Nigerian law, individuals who have reached the age of criminal responsibility are answerable for their actions, regardless of their age,” he noted.

Underaged protesters and ongoing legal issues.

The underaged protesters continue to demand accountability from the government, asserting that their actions stem from a desire for change. However, the recent court incident complicates their narrative. The police’s claims about the staged fainting cast a shadow on the protesters’ message.

As the investigation unfolds, the NPF assures the public of their commitment to professionalism. “The NPF acknowledges public interest in this case and assures the public that our officers will maintain professionalism throughout the legal process,” Adejobi stated.

The situation remains dynamic as the nationwide protesters navigate their advocacy amid these legal challenges. The police’s emphasis on transparency and justice will play a crucial role in shaping public perception moving forward.
