A large crowd of APC supporters gathered in Abuja on Tuesday to demand reforms in Nigeria’s struggling oil sector. The protesters flooded the Three Arms Zone near the National Assembly Complex, voicing concerns over soaring fuel prices, persistent fuel scarcity, and the increasing economic hardship facing Nigerians.

The protest was organized by the APC Solidarity and Development Forum, a coalition of youth and civil society organizations. The group’s leaders, Comrade Kabir Matazu and Danielsi Momoh, spoke to journalists about the systemic failures within the oil industry that have caused widespread frustration among citizens.

APC supporters demand immediate action

APC supporters had letters  addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.  The letters highlighted their dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the oil sector. Despite repeated promises from authorities, fuel shortages and high prices continue to burden the public, eroding trust in the government’s ability to manage the nation’s oil resources.

The protesters pointed out that local refineries remain non-operational, despite the government’s $4 billion investment in the sector. They argued that this failure to revitalize domestic refining capabilities undermines President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda and reflects poor leadership and management in the oil industry.

Systemic failures and call for change

The APC supporters also raised concerns about corruption within the oil sector, calling for immediate reforms. They demanded the creation of an investigative committee to look into alleged misconduct. They focus, they said, is   on holding corrupt officials accountable. The protesters warned that the continued importation of substandard petroleum products poses a threat to public health and safety.

“We need a clear roadmap for revitalizing and operating our local refineries,” said Comrade Matazu. “This will ensure self-sufficiency in petroleum products and reduce reliance on imports. The National Assembly must also pass stricter regulations to prevent the importation of substandard products.”

Call for accountability and reform

The protesters called on President Tinubu to appoint a qualified leader to oversee the oil sector and restore public confidence. They emphasized that only decisive leadership can reform Nigeria’s oil industry to better serve the nation’s economic needs.

In their letter to the National Assembly, the APC supporters demanded that the authorities ahould hand over those responsible for the alleged corruption to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for prosecution. They urged lawmakers to take swift action to ensure the oil sector operates efficiently and transparently.

“We demand accountability,” said Danielsi Momoh. “The National Assembly must act now to protect the health and safety of Nigerians and ensure that the oil sector is held to the highest standards of integrity.”
