NUPENG threatens strike as some military personnel allegedly storm oil rig. The union claims such external intervention breach their labour rights.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has issued a stern notice of a nationwide strike. The union is protesting the military’s involvement in the forced ejection of workers from the Oritsetimeyin oil rig.

NUPENG expressed outrage after naval personnel allegedly stormed the Oritsetimeyin oil rig. Reports indicate that the personnel arrived by helicopter and clashed with workers. The altercation was filmed by workers and quickly shared online. In the videos, workers can be heard saying, “We are fighting for our rights; we cannot be slaves in our own country.”

A national official from NUPENG confirmed that the rig was shut down following the invasion.  “We are already mobilizing our members for a nationwide strike. This situation cannot continue,” he reportedly told Vanguard. NUPENG accused the government of enabling employers to breach agreements made with the union. The union insists that the military should not be used to settle industrial disputes.

NUPENG condemns military intervention in labour dispute

The shutdown of the rig, caused by the escalating industrial dispute, has intensified tensions. The union strongly condemns the use of military and security forces to resolve labor disputes. NUPENG’s President, Prince Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, wrote a petition to the Federal Government. The petition calls on the National Security Adviser (NSA) to intervene. They argue that the military’s actions are unwarranted and harmful to workers’ rights.

According to NUPENG, the employers at the Oritsetimeyin Rig, Dutchford E&P and Selective Marine Services, have repeatedly disregarded agreements regarding workers’ severance packages. The union accused these companies of unfair labour practices, claiming they have failed to pay terminal benefits.

Call  for government action

In their petition, NUPENG also highlighted previous agreements made at meetings with the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). The union emphasized that these meetings had assurances from regulatory bodies to uphold the workers’ rights. However, the union now accuses these companies of reneging on their promises, further exacerbating the situation.

NUPENG also warned that any continued use of force by the military could lead to fatalities. The union called on the NSA, DSS, and the Federal Government to prevent further escalation. They urged the authorities to recognize that this is an industrial relations issue, not a military conflict. The union stated that the workers have a right to demand the full implementation of signed agreements.

NUPENG Threatens strike over rights violations

As tensions rise, NUPENG’s threat to go on strike has gained widespread attention. The union expressed determination to protect its members and their rights. NUPENG’s officials are urging the Nigerian government to take immediate action. They warned that if the authorities fail to intervene, they may embark on a nationwide strike.

The strike could significantly disrupt Nigeria’s oil industry, affecting both domestic and international operations. NUPENG’s actions are a direct response to what it sees as a violation of labor agreements and workers’ rights.
