National security  in Nigeria is facing threats from multiple angles. Senate President Godswill Akpabio is concerned. See why!

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed concerns about the growing security challenges in Nigeria. He spoke at the 2024 Defence Advisers and Attachés Conference in Abuja.

Represented by Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar, Akpabio warned that the country was facing serious threats to its stability. He described recent events as a direct challenge to the core of Nigeria’s nationhood.

Akpabio emphasized the critical need for leadership to anticipate and address security challenges with a well-coordinated approach. “We have witnessed events that challenge the stability of our nation,” he said. He stressed the importance of intelligence in guiding national security strategies.

The Senate President’s comments reflect the deepening concerns over Nigeria’s security situation. From rising banditry and kidnappings to persistent insurgencies, the nation is grappling with several security challenges. These problems have become more complex, requiring proactive solutions. Akpabio called on security experts to anticipate threats and assess their impacts on the nation’s future.

Adapting national security to evolving threats

The security challenges in Nigeria have continued to evolve, with new and more sophisticated threats emerging. At the conference, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, highlighted the need for the country’s intelligence community to adapt to the changing landscape. He pointed out that advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are now essential tools in identifying and addressing security threats.

Matawalle explained that these technologies could help process vast amounts of data crucial in tackling complex security challenges. He noted that addressing security challenges was key to achieving these goals.

Integrating AI and other technologies into Nigeria’s defense strategy is seen as a critical step toward enhancing national security. Technology is expected to provide vital support in identifying and neutralizing threats before they escalate.

Regional instability and climate change

One of the most significant security challenges facing Nigeria today is the instability in neighboring countries. The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General Akomaye Parker Undiandeye, spoke about the challenges posed by regional instability and geopolitical tensions. He noted that terrorism, kidnapping, and cybercrime were not only domestic issues but also regional ones that require a coordinated response.

Undiandeye also highlighted the impact of climate change on security, stating that environmental changes could exacerbate existing vulnerabilities, particularly in the north and other vulnerable regions. “Our task is to provide accurate intelligence to support Nigeria’s security objectives,” he said. His comments underscore the importance of timely, actionable intelligence in combating security challenges, both within and outside Nigeria’s borders.

The Nigerian Armed Forces have made significant strides in combating terrorism and other crimes. However, the country’s security forces face constant challenges in dealing with cross-border insurgents, armed groups, and criminal gangs.

Leveraging technology for national security

The 2024 Defence Advisers and Attachés Conference also focused on the role of technology in strengthening national and regional security. The conference’s theme was,“Exploring the Role of Technology in Strengthening National and Regional Security.” It emphasized the need to integrate advanced technologies into security practices.

Undiandeye urged security experts to draw on their experience and insights from their respective areas  to enhance Nigeria’s security capabilities. He stressed the importance of acquiring critical technologies to support national defense strategies. “I am confident this conference will enhance your abilities to identify and facilitate the acquisition of critical technologies for our national security and defense,” he concluded.

As security challenges continue to rise, Nigeria is increasingly looking towards technological solutions to address these problems. From AI and data analytics to drone surveillance and cybersecurity measures, the country is making efforts to modernize its security infrastructure and stay ahead of emerging threats.
