President-elect Donald Trump has unveiled major appointments for his second term, including tech billionaire Elon Musk. Musk will lead a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He will be joined by Vivek Ramaswamy, a businessman and political activist. Their job will to tackle government waste and inefficiency.
In a statement released on November 12, 2024, Trump said the appointments would help his administration “dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excessive regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies.” The new department, referred to as DOGE, is expected to drive large-scale reforms. It is also to create a more entrepreneurial approach to government, according to the President-elect.
Trump, who defeated Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, emphasized that the work of DOGE would have far-reaching impacts. “This will send shockwaves through the system,” he stated. “Anyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people, will feel the changes.”
The new initiative aims to reduce the $6.5 trillion in annual government spending, targeting waste, fraud, and inefficiency. Trump expressed confidence that Musk and Ramaswamy would be instrumental in reshaping the federal bureaucracy.
A new era of efficiency and reform
Musk, the founder of Tesla, SpaceX, and the social media platform X, has been a strong supporter of Trump. He donated $75 million to the pro-Trump political group during the 2024 election. Speaking about his new role, Musk referred to DOGE as “potentially the ‘Manhattan Project’ of our time,” noting that Republicans have long dreamed of such reforms.
Ramaswamy, a vocal advocate for reducing government intervention in the economy, will partner with Musk to lead the initiative. The department’s goals include making the federal government more accountable to taxpayers and fostering an environment that promotes economic growth and efficiency.
Other appointments for Trump second term
In addition to Musk and Ramaswamy, Trump announced other key appointments in his second-term cabinet. These include Lee Zeldin as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Mike Waltz as National Security Advisor, and Susie Wiles as White House Chief of Staff. Trump also named Tom Homan as Border Czar and Elise Stefanik as Ambassador to the United Nations.
Trump’s second term will focus on reducing government size and increasing efficiency. The work of DOGE would conclude by July 4, 2026, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. He expressed hope that a smaller, more effective government would be a fitting tribute to America’s founding.
The creation of the Department of Government Efficiency signals a major shift in Trump’s approach to federal administration. With key figures like Musk and Ramaswamy at the helm, the Trump administration aims to overhaul the government and make it more responsive to the needs of American citizens.
