Ondo election has ended with the governor winning a second term, according to INEC. His PDP rival is yet to officially admitted defeat, in the spirit of sportsmanship.

The Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has been re-elected following the just-concluded Ondo governorship election. Aiyedatiwa, who ran under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), won with a resounding margin, securing 366,781 votes. His closest opponent, Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 117,845 votes.

APC celebrates the Ondo election

In a statement released after the election results were announced, the APC, celebrated the electoral victory. Through its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party congratulated Aiyedatiwa on his victory. The party described his success as a clear sign that the governor’s policies had resonated with the people of Ondo State.

“The overwhelming victory of Governor Aiyedatiwa reflects the trust the electorate has in his leadership,” the statement read. It further commended the governor for his campaign, which focused on hope and progress. The APC also acknowledged the professionalism of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies during the election.

The ruling party expressed confidence that the governor would continue to build on the progress made during his first term.

“We are confident that with this renewed mandate, Governor Aiyedatiwa will take the state to even greater heights of development,” the APC statement concluded.

Aiyedatiwa’s victory and the role of INEC

The results of the Ondo governorship election were officially declared by the State Returning Officer, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, at the State Collation Centre in Akure, the state capital. He announced that Aiyedatiwa met all the legal requirements to be declared the winner of the election. The final count confirmed that the APC candidate had won with a commanding lead across all 18 local government areas of the state.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s victory in the Ondo election is seen as a significant endorsement of his leadership. His ability to secure such a decisive mandate suggests strong public approval of his policies and initiatives. This victory also strengthens the APC’s position in the southwest region of Nigeria, where it has maintained considerable influence.

Security agencies played a key role in ensuring the peaceful conduct of the election. The collaboration between INEC and security forces helped prevent any major disruptions during the polls.
