Tinubu hits Obasanjo, describing him as most corrupt. “Obasanjo has no moral right to condemn any government,” he says.
President Bola Tinubu, speaking through his spokesman, frowns at former resident Olusegun Obansajo’s attack on the current government. He said democracy suffered a mortal wound under Obasanjo’s watch.
Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Sunday Dare, hit back at former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Dare, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), dismissed Obasanjo’s criticism of Tinubu’s government. He accused the former president of hypocrisy and dishonesty in his recent remarks at Yale University.
Obasanjo had described Nigeria as a “failing state” under Tinubu’s leadership. He called for the removal of INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, and reforms to the electoral system. Obasanjo claimed that the nation’s corruption and insecurity have worsened under Tinubu’s watch. He urged the Nigerian government to urgently address the country’s problems.
Tinubu hits Obasanjo on corruption
In his response, Dare blasted Obasanjo’s record in office. He reminded Nigerians that Obasanjo’s administration was marred by corruption. Dare pointed out the $16 billion Obasanjo’s government allegedly wasted on an electricity project, which resulted in no significant improvement. “Obasanjo has no moral right to condemn any government,” Dare stated. He added that Obasanjo should apologize to Nigerians for failing to lay essential infrastructure.
According to Dare, Obasanjo’s government inflicted lasting damage on Nigeria’s democracy. He referred to the failed attempt to extend his presidency beyond two terms as a prime example. Dare said successive governments, including President Tinubu’s, have had to clean up the mess left by Obasanjo.
Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda: A contrast to Obasanjo’s leadership
Dare emphasized that the Tinubu administration is focused on reforms. He reiterated that President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” is on track. “Everything else is just noise,” Dare stated, dismissing Obasanjo’s remarks as irrelevant. He urged Nigerians to support the current administration’s efforts in moving the country forward.
Dare closed by thanking Obasanjo for acknowledging that there is hope for Nigeria under Tinubu’s leadership. He insisted that Obasanjo should reflect on his own role in Nigeria’s past struggles. Tinubu’s spokesman reminded the former president that leadership involves constructive support, not constant criticism.
