Four Nigerian students have been sentenced for their roles in a violent altercation in Leicester on November 4, 2021.

The confrontation began in the early hours of November 4 on New Park Street. A heated argument between a group of individuals quickly turned violent.

Armed with knives and a baseball bat, the group began fighting. During the chaos, one of the suspects stabbed an 18-year-old man, leaving him injured. Some kind hearted persons rushed the victim to the hospital with four stab wounds.

Police launched a detailed investigation using CCTV footage, phone tracking, and public appeals. Witnesses identified the four Nigerian students as key suspects in the violent disorder.

Sentences handed down

After a six-week trial, the students were sentenced on November 14. Here are the details:

  • Destiny Ojo (21, Plumstead, London): Seven years for violent disorder, attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH), and GBH with intent.
  • Habib Lawal (21, Bexley, London): Five years for violent disorder, attempted GBH, and GBH with intent.
  • Ridwanulahi Raheem (21, Lambeth, London): Three years for violent disorder and possession of a bladed article.
  • Joshua Davies-Ero (21, Bexley, London): Two years for violent disorder.

A fifth defendant, Justin Asamoah (22, Merton), pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article. He sentencing comes up on  November 22.

Police efforts to tackle violent disorder

Detective Constable Sean Downey spoke about the severity of the incident. He said: “This incident highlights the serious danger of violent disorder. It is extremely fortunate that further injury was not caused to the people involved or to other members of the public who witnessed the incident. This could have been a very different investigation.”

Downey thanked everyone who assisted in the investigation. He added, “As a force, our priority is to keep the public safe. We will not tolerate violent disorder in our communities and will take action against those responsible.”
