Edo politics gets more intriguing as Okpebholo probes his predecessor. His focus appears critical state assets.
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has launched an investigation into Godwin Obaseki’s administration. The investigation focuses on the assets of Obaseki’s government. Okpebholo formed a 14-member committee for this task.
Governor Okpebholo’s initiative aims to promote development and transparent leadership in Edo State.
The committee will be chaired by Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe. It will investigate past administration’s assets.
Formation of the committee
Governor Okpebholo announced the committee’s formation in a statement by Fred Itua, the press secretary. The committee’s deputy chairman is Anslem Ojezua, with Frank Edebor serving as the secretary.
The committee will be inaugurated on November 26, 2024, at the Government House in Benin City.
Other members include Kassim Afegbua, Patrick Ikhariale, and Taiwo Akerele, among others.
The committee will investigate Obaseki’s administration for transparency and accountability.
The probe follows concerns about missing or incomplete asset records from the Obaseki-led government.
Agenda for transparency in Edo politics
Okpebholo has emphasized accountability and probity in governance since taking office.
He promised transparency and has already begun investigating several areas from Obaseki’s term.
In his inaugural speech, Okpebholo pledged to examine the exclusion of 14 lawmakers in 2019.
He also ordered a probe into the recruitment process in the state civil service under Obaseki.
Okpebholo’s administration seeks to ensure that governance is honest, open, and accountable.
Edo politics has seen a shift since Obaseki took over from Oshiomhole.
Obaseki focused on development, but his tenure raised questions about governance transparency.
After taking office, Okpebholo made it clear that accountability would be his focus.
