EFCC vs Yahaya Bello generated another round of controversy on Tuesday, as the anti-graft agency was implicated in another allegation of corruption.

A major controversy emerged on Tuesday over the arrest of  former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, by the EFCC.  The arrest was widely reported, but was followed by new claims about alleged corruption behind the scenes.

A well-known social media figure, VeryDarkMan, vigorously raised doubt concerning Yahaya Bello’s arrest. He suggested that the arrest was part of a bigger conspiracy involving the EFCC chairman.

In an online post, VeryDarkMan claimed there were allegations that Yahaya Bello offered N10 billion to the EFCC chairman to stage the arrest.

He went further, challenging the EFCC to parade Bello with a placard in the same way they publicly display suspected internet fraudsters. This, he argued, would prove their claims are legitimate and not part of a larger cover-up.

There was no official statement from the anti-graft agency at the time of this report. However, EFCC Spokesman, Dele Oyewale, confirmed that Bello was arrested on Tuesday about 12.54pm. In a short video, EFCC spokesman told TVC News that that former governor was arrested alongside three of his lawyers. He said they were in a session with the agency’s investigators. “He is in our custody,” he added.

The accusation that the EFCC may have been bribed has shocked many. If true, it would undermine the credibility of the agency in its fight against corruption. VeryDarkMan’s challenge has put the EFCC under intense pressure. The public is now questioning whether the arrest was genuine or part of a bigger political scheme.

Sources weigh in on EFCC vs Yahaya Bello

Independent analysts and political observers have weighed in on the matter, calling the situation complicated. A senior journalist with insider knowledge of the EFCC vs Yahaya Bello case stated that there are multiple layers to the story.

According to this source, the EFCC has had ongoing investigations into Bello for alleged financial mismanagement since his time as governor. These include issues with state funds and various contracts awarded to companies with political ties.

However, the journalist also pointed out that claims of bribery were not entirely new. But no concrete evidence has yet emerged to confirm these allegations. The source stressed the importance of transparency and urged the EFCC to provide more clarity on their investigation.

Another reliable source added that the EFCC’s case against Yahaya Bello is not about political vendettas but also involves genuine corruption charges. However, there are questions about the timing of the arrest and whether it is politically motivated.

EFCC’s track record on corruption cases

Despite the controversy, the EFCC has had notable successes in recent years. The commission has secured numerous high-profile convictions, sending a strong message against corruption in Nigeria.

Some of the EFCC’s recent successes include the conviction of several politicians and business tycoons for embezzling public funds. In one case, a former state governor was sentenced to 14 years in prison for money laundering. Additionally, the EFCC has seized millions of dollars in illicit assets from individuals accused of corruption.

However, critics argue that while the EFCC has made some strides, it is still far from perfect. The commission has faced accusations of selective justice, with some suggesting that high-profile individuals with political influence are often shielded from prosecution.
