Impeachment rumour was put to rest on Oct 17. Senators rose as one in support of their leader, Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The Senate has passed a vote of confidence in Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate. This resolution followed a Point of Order raised by Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, PDP-Kebbi North, in response to an impeachment rumour regarding the Senate President.
Senator Abdullahi addressed the chamber, citing Orders 10 and 42 of the Senate Standing Rules. He stated, “Reports claim that northern senators are plotting to impeach Akpabio. As a senior member of the Northern Senators’ Forum, I assure you there’s no such attempt. Anyone trying to create discord undermines our democracy and this institution’s ability to function.”
He emphasized the need for unity among senators, urging them to resist divisive tactics. “We must stand united behind our leadership,” he said. “This is the work of enemies.”
Senator Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central supported Abdullahi’s motion. He proposed enforcing a vote of confidence in Akpabio and the entire National Assembly leadership. “This is the way to go,” he affirmed.
In response, Akpabio thanked his colleagues. He assured them, “The unity and bond among us will continue. No social media or external forces will break this bond. We appreciate your confidence and will justify it in the coming months and years.”
Akpabio debunked impeachment rumour
The President of the Senate had debunked the report of planned impeachment against him, yesterday. He described it as fake and a figment of the writer’s imagination.
Akpabio insisted that there was no crack in the Upper Chamber and no Senator or Caucus was plotting any impeachment against the President of the Senate, stressing that “every Senator is focused on raising the bar of Legislative Agenda and Nation building.”
“As a Head of one of the Arms of government, the President of the Senate categorically denies these baseless claims and reaffirms his commitment to transformational leadership of the Senate particularly and effectively collaborates with the other arms of government. There is no crack in the Upper Chamber and no Senator or Caucus is plotting any impeachment against the President of the Senate.
“The allegations are nothing but a desperate attempt to create division and discord among the esteemed senators. It’s unfortunate that some individuals would resort to spreading falsehoods to promote the invidious reins of their blackmail enterprise.”
