Juventus cut ties amid doping scandal. His recent doping ban has been the final blow in what has been a disappointing second spell at the club.

Juventus has officially announced the termination of Paul Pogba’s contract, ending a turbulent chapter in the French midfielder’s career at the club.

The Serie A giants and Pogba have mutually agreed to part ways, with the contract now set to end on November 30, 2024. This move comes as Pogba looks to return to the pitch after a doping suspension that has kept him sidelined for months.

Pogba joined Juventus in 2012, initially moving from Manchester United. It was at Juventus where Pogba’s talent truly flourished. During his first spell, he helped the club win four consecutive Serie A titles (2012-2016) and reached the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2015. His combination of strength, vision, and skill made him one of the best midfielders in Europe.

However, after a successful stint in Turin, Pogba returned to Manchester United in 2016 for a then-world record fee of £89 million. While his time at United witnessed moments of brilliance, it was inconsistent, leading to his eventual departure in 2022.

Juventus cut ties amid doping scandal

Pogba’s recent doping ban has been the final blow in what has been a disappointing second spell at Juventus. In August 2023, Pogba tested positive for testosterone, leading to an initial suspension. After months of uncertainty, the midfielder’s legal team confirmed that he would be banned for four years.

With the doping ban hanging over him, Juventus cut ties with the player. While Pogba has always been a player of immense talent, injuries marred his return to the club in 2022. Juventus hoped for the Pogba of old — the dominant, creative force who thrived in the midfield — but injuries and off-field distractions have hampered his impact.

The end of an era

The termination of Pogba’s contract with Juventus comes down to several factors. First, his inability to stay fit has been a major issue. Pogba has struggled with knee problems since his return, and these injuries limited his playing time, making it difficult for him to regain his best form.

Second, the doping scandal cast a long shadow over his future. Juventus could not afford to keep a player who was facing such a serious suspension, especially considering the financial and reputational risks involved. The club had hoped to build its future around younger, more reliable players, and Pogba’s departure clears the way for a new chapter.

Finally, Juventus’ decision to cut ties was probably because of the broader financial landscape. The club has been under pressure to reduce wages and avoid risks associated with players who are either injured or suspended. By parting ways with Pogba, Juventus can reallocate resources toward rebuilding their squad for future success.

What’s next for Pogba?

With his contract terminated by Juventus, the future of Paul Pogba is now uncertain. The midfielder is expected to seek a move to a new club once his suspension ends. Yet, his next destination will depend on how the legal situation surrounding his doping case unfolds. If Pogba successfully appeals and his ban is reduced, he could return to top-level football sooner rather than later.

There is no shortage of potential suitors for a fit and motivated Pogba. His pedigree in European football and experience in the Premier League, Serie A, and internationally  make him attractive for clubs seeking a talented and versatile midfielder. Teams in need of a creative, box-to-box player could look to offer him a second chance. But the baggage from his time at Juventus may make clubs cautious.

Pogba’s future prospects hinge on his ability to overcome the challenges that have plagued him in recent years. If he can regain his fitness  and stay free from controversy, Pogba can still enjoy a successful next phase of his career. Clubs in France, the Premier League, or even a return to a revitalized Juventus could be possibilities.

However, time is ticking. The 31-year-old’s best years are behind him. And injuries, legal issues, etc have combined to somewhat tarnish his reputation. If Pogba is unable to regain form, he may find himself considering retirement sooner than expected.
