A generated image of building, a symbol of unity, even as PDP expels lawmaker.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expels lawmaker Ikenga Ugochinyere, who is representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State.

The party confirmed the expulsion  in a letter dated December 5, 2024. The Ideato LGA chapter signed it, with Chairman Hon. ThankGod Okeke and Secretary Onyebuchi Umeh addressing the State Chairman.

The expulsion followed findings from the PDP’s disciplinary committee. The committee investigated allegations of indiscipline, insubordination, and anti-party activities.

According to the report, Ugochinyere violated several sections of the PDP Constitution. The authorities saw his actions  as undermining the party’s unity and credibility.

 Details why PDP expels lawmaker

The disciplinary committee’s report, dated November 27, 2024, led to Ugochinyere’s expulsion. The party found him guilty of  misconduct, breaching key party rules.

The ward executive suspended the lawmaker on October 14, 2024, for failing to attend a meeting. Despite reminders, Ugochinyere did not appear to answer the charges.

The letter from the Ideato LGA Executive Committee said: “Upon receipt of the report, the LGA Executive Committee of Ideato North met on the 5th December, 2024, and unanimously adopted the report of the disciplinary committee.

“In light of this, Hon. Imo Ugochinyere Ikeagwonu is hereby expelled from the party (PDP) with immediate effect and he ceases to be a member of the Peoples Democratic Party in Umuopia/Umukegwu ward of Ideato North LGA.”

The expulsion came after Ugochinyere’s failure to attend meetings, engage in party activities, and his unauthorized publicity of internal disputes.

Provocative statements and public criticism

Ugochinyere also faced criticism for making derogatory public statements against the party. He faced allegations of  bringing the PDP into public disrepute.

Political analyst Dr. Chinonso Nwosu commented, “The expulsion is a clear message. No member is above the party’s rules.”

Political commentator, Mrs. Nkechi Okafor, said the expulsion was in order. “Such actions undermine party unity”, she added.

The party says it is determined to maintain discipline and unity within its ranks. Analysts added that expulsions like this one are necessary to restore order.
