Police arrest female officers for extorting money from drivers. Observers commend the move but urge that it should be nationwide and sustained.

The Rivers State Police Command has detained three female officers for alleged extortion of motorists in Port Harcourt. The incident involved Inspectors Sarah Anendei, Caroline Promise, and Christiana Jatau, who were arrested under the Rumuokoro flyover in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Reports suggest that these officers had been involved in similar activities for an extended period. They allegedly operated at an unauthorized checkpoint, targeting innocent drivers. Following several complaints, the police command began monitoring the officers.

Monitoring leads to arrest of female officers

Confirming the news, Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed that “Police arrest female officers” was the result of a coordinated operation. The command’s CP Monitoring Unit, led by operatives under the Commissioner of Police, conducted the operation around 3 pm on October 29, 2024. The arrest occurred after the team discovered the three officers extorting money from drivers under the Rumuokoro Flyover.

Superintendent Iringe-Koko noted that at the time of their arrest, two of the female officers were out of uniform. That further violated police regulations. “Two of them, Inspectors Caroline Promise and Christiana Jatau, were out of uniform while engaging in this unprofessional conduct,” she stated. The authorities caught the officers’ misconduct on video, providing undeniable evidence of their actions.

Evidence on the spot

An immediate search of the officers confirmed the allegations. The police recovered money taken from the motorists on the spot. That marked the police command’s quick response to uphold ethical standards. The incident highlights the Rivers State Police Command’s dedication to rooting out corruption and maintaining public trust.

Observers have commended the police effort but urge that it should sustained across the country.
