Sexual harassment, a recurring evil in Nigerian tertiary institutions, has allegedly resulted in the sack of some lecturers. Details below…

The Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State, has dismissed four lecturers over serious allegations of sexual harassment. The university’s Governing Council took the decision  during its Second Council meeting, which took place recently in Lokoja.

This marks a significant step in addressing the growing concerns  within Nigerian universities. The council praised the university’s management for following due process during the investigations that led to the expulsion of the lecturers.

Zero tolerance for sexual harassment

Sexual harassment has been a persistent issue in Nigerian universities, in recent times. Students, advocacy groups, and even government bodies have often condemned the problem.

In the past, several cases  have resulted in public outcry but often lacked sufficient action. However, the dismissal of these four lecturers from Federal University Lokoja sends a clear message that such conduct will not be tolerated.

It is not the first time that Nigerian universities have expelled lecturers for sexual misconduct. In recent years, a number of Nigerian universities have taken stronger measure against sexual harassment.

University takes a stand against unethical behaviour

The university council emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards any unethical behaviour within its ranks. The council stressed that any lecturer or staff member found guilty of misconduct would face severe consequences, including dismissal. This strict approach aims to ensure that the institution maintains a respectful and professional environment for both students and staff.

The Federal University Lokoja also instructed the university administration to fast-track the resolution of other pending sexual harassment cases, especially one in the Faculty of Science that has recently drawn public attention.

Also, the university’s governing body called on students to speak out against any form of sexual harassment they may experience. It assured them that their concerns would be taken seriously and handled with the utmost care and confidentiality.

By taking a strong stand, the Federal University Lokoja hopes to set a precedent for other institutions to follow. It is sending a clear message that it will not tolerate unethical behaviours at any level.

The issue of sexual harassment has sparked increasing public debate across Nigeria. Many Nigerian students have demanded better protection from harassment and misconduct, calling for stricter enforcement of policies and more transparency in the handling of such cases.
