Simon Ekpa arrested nine days to his much publicised convention to restore independence to Biafra. But his allies claim it is mere propaganda.
The self-acclaimed Prime Minister of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, has been arrested in Finland along with four others. They are facing charges related to terrorist activities. The Finnish Central Criminal Police confirmed the arrest on November 21. Ekpa was taken into custody on charges of inciting terrorism.
However, his allies claim it is simply a propaganda. A fellow identified as Simon Ekpa Akparawa on X (formerly Twitter) claims he is under protection by Finland government. According to the poster, the separatist is secured against the Nigerian government. He claims there were efforts to kidnap Ekpa.
The police reported that Ekpa is the main suspect in this case. He is accused of using social media to incite violence in Nigeria, particularly in the southeastern regions. The authorities believe that his actions led to attacks on civilians and law enforcement officers in the region. Ekpa’s alleged activities, including promoting violence, have raised concerns among both Nigerian and international authorities.
According to the Finnish police, the five individuals, including Ekpa, were arrested for their roles in financing and promoting terrorist actions. While Ekpa is accused of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent, the other four are charged with providing financial support to these activities.
Crime Commissioner Otto Hiltunen explained that the investigation has involved extensive international cooperation. The police suspect that Ekpa’s actions have caused harm to both civilians and authorities in Nigeria. Investigators are also looking into his use of social media platforms to spread his separatist agenda, which has been linked to violent uprisings in Nigeria.
Reactions as Simon Ekpa is Arrest
The news of Simon Ekpa’s arrest has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters of the Biafra separatist cause have rallied behind him, condemning the Finnish authorities for what they see as an unjust arrest. They argue that Ekpa is fighting for the rights of the Biafran people, and that his arrest is an attempt to silence their cause.
On the other hand, critics welcome the arrest, viewing it as a necessary step in curbing violence and separatism. The Nigerian government has long opposed calls for the independence of Biafra and sees Ekpa’s activities as a threat to national security.
The arrest of Simon Ekpa has further intensified the debate over the ongoing Biafran secession movement. His supporters are already demanding his release. But others argue that his actions are fueling unnecessary violence in the region. The case remains under investigation, with further hearings set to take place in Finland’s court.
