President Bola Tinubu has announced the scrapping of the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development. This followed approval from the Federal Executive council (FEC). The decision comes as part of a broader reforms initiative.

Bayo Onanuga, Tinubiu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, said in a tweet that the announcement was made on Tuesday in Abuja.

He wrote, “President Tinubu and Federal Executive Council scrap Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development.”

New ministry emerges as Tinubu scraps others

As a consequence, the government will establish a new Ministry of Regional Development. This ministry will oversee all regional development commissions.  The Niger Delta Development Commission and others will fall under the new ministry.

The new structure will cover the North West, South West, and North East Development Commissions. This change aims to streamline operations and improve efficiency in regional development efforts.

Transition of sports responsibilities

The responsibilities of the former Ministry of Sports Development will now transfer to the National Sports Commission. The commission will handle all sports-related activities in Nigeria.

“The National Sports Commission will take over the role of the Ministry of Sports,” stated Onanuga. This shift aims to enhance the focus on sports administration.

Additionally, the FEC approved merging the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy. This merger will create a single entity to better manage these sectors.
