A tragic shooting in Anambra occurred on Thursday in the Ifete area of Awka. It took place near the gate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University and resulted in multiple fatalities.

This tragic event follows a similar attack in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area, just five days earlier. That incident left 12 people dead.

Eyewitness accounts of the tragic shooting in Anambra

Eyewitnesses reported seeing at least seven bodies scattered after the attack. Some victims were tricycle operators, suggesting a possible link to cult-related violence.

One witness, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, described the panic caused by the shooting. “I saw at least seven dead bodies on my way home,” he recounted.

Another local business owner heard gunshots in the morning. He saw several tricycle operators retreating from the university toward the town.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the tragic shooting in Anambra. He announced that the police have deployed a response team  to the scene.

Troubling increase in  shooting incidents

Anambra State has witnessed a troubling increase in violent shooting incidents over the past few years. These attacks have often resulted in significant loss of life and have raised concerns about safety in the region. Reports indicate that in the last six months alone, multiple shootings have occurred, claiming dozens of lives, with estimates suggesting over 30 fatalities during this period.

The shootings often appear to be linked to cult-related violence and rivalries among criminal groups. Communities have experienced heightened fear and anxiety as these events disrupt daily life and create an atmosphere of insecurity.

In response to this alarming trend, local authorities have intensified their efforts to combat violence. The Anambra State Police have increased patrols in affected areas and deployed special task forces to investigate and respond to incidents more effectively. Additionally, authorities have introduced community engagement initiatives to encourage residents to report suspicious activities and foster cooperation with law enforcement.
