Nigeria's national flag represents a symbol of pride, as Ademola Lookman wins African Footballer of the Year 2024 and charges Nigerians to turn pains into power.

Ademola Lookman captivated the world with an inspiring speech after winning the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award.  He charged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to turn their current pain into power. This powerful message resonated deeply, given the challenges Lookman had faced in the past and his eventual triumph.

“I want to say to the young children…don’t let your failures weigh you down to the point they break your wings. Matter of fact, turn your pain into your power and continue to fight,” he said.

The 27-year-old winger’s journey has been marked by highs and lows. Four years ago, he missed a crucial penalty for Fulham in a Premier League match against West Ham. His Panenka-style effort, aimed at securing a late draw, backfired when goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski easily picked the ball. The penalty miss not only cost Fulham the match but also led to widespread ridicule on social media.

The then-Fulham manager, Scott Parker, criticized the young player for his choice of technique. “You can’t take penalties like that,” Parker remarked, “and he knows that.” The incident was a bitter blow, but it also became a defining moment in Lookman’s career.

Turn pain into power: Lookman’s resilience

Reflecting on that moment in his acceptance speech, Lookman said, “Just over four years ago, I failed in front of the world. Fast forward four years, and I’m the best player in Africa.” This statement encapsulated his personal growth, resilience, and determination. Analysts say Lookman’s rise to prominence in world football, culminating in the CAF award, is a testament to the power of perseverance.

He shared a message of hope for young Nigerians, urging them not to let their failures define them. Instead, Lookman encouraged them to “turn their pain into power” and keep pushing forward.

Lookman also thanked the Almighty for the blessings in his life and for the opportunity to represent his country. “This award today is a blessing to me, my family, and my nation,” he said. “To be recognised as the best player in Africa is something incredible, and I’m extremely proud.”

His father, who has been a constant pillar of support throughout his career, expressed immense pride in his son’s achievement. He emphasized that Lookman’s journey was a reflection of hard work, discipline, and the ability to rise above adversity. “He has shown that hard work and dedication can turn any obstacle into an opportunity,” he said in an emotional interview.

Football fans, especially in Nigeria, celebrated Lookman’s victory with joy and pride. Supporters and colleagues alike flood the social media  with congratulatory messages. Ahmed Musa, Super Eagles’ former captain,  congratulated Lookman on his success, calling it an inspiration to the entire country. “Your success shows that no dream is too big,” Musa tweeted.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State also congratulated Lookman, calling him a role model for young Nigerians. “Lookman’s journey is a true reflection of what it means to rise above challenges,” Sanwo-Olu remarked.

Many observers say Lookman’s impact goes beyond football success to  using one’s platform to inspire change. “Through his story, Lookman has become a beacon of hope for young Nigerians struggling with adversity,” said Julius Ibah. “This is especially meaningful in a country where many young people face unemployment, poverty, and other socio-economic hardships.”
