VeryDarkMan (VDM) apologises to the Nigeria police for using their uniform in a recent viral video. He issued the apology after meeting with the police authorities in Abuja.

The Nigeria Police Force had launched an investigation after VDM, a popular social media influencer, appeared dressed in full police attire. His insignia was associated with a chief superintendent. The police called this a misuse of official regalia and condemned the act as a violation of Nigerian law.

VDM says he meant no harm. He advised other content creators to always seek permission from the security agencies before their uniforms.

In their statement, the police emphasized that wearing unauthorized police uniforms is a criminal offense. They stressed that it undermines public trust and the police’s integrity, reminding the public that symbols of authority must be used responsibly. While they acknowledged VDM’s role as an activist and the value of creative expression, they urged him to avoid actions that might mislead the public.

Repeated clashes before VDM apologises

This incident adds to VDM’s contentious relationship with Nigerian authorities. He has repeatedly clashed with the Nigerian police due to his outspoken criticisms and campaigns addressing perceived injustices.

VDM’s journey into advocacy began through documenting incidents of police misconduct and sharing his views on social media, which resonated with a wide audience calling for reform. However, his confrontational style and direct accusations against public officials and law enforcement have led to several legal issues. The police often frame their responses  as “invitations for questioning.”

For instance, in May 2024, the police took VDM into custody in Abuja. He allegedly posted content online that defamed certain public figures. VDM’s legal team described the event as an arrest. But police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, clarified that he was merely “invited for questioning.”  The “invitation”, however, lasted two weeks, during which his legal counsel and supporters argued for his immediate release.

Other clashes

In October 2024, VDM again faced police scrutiny. The authorities investigated accusations of cyberstalking, cyberbullying, and defamation. His legal team maintained that the accusations stemmed from VDM’s commitment to exposing issues such as police brutality and corruption. Supporters said his critiques were necessary for public awareness, arguing that the charges represented a broader crackdown on free speech.

A significant catalyst in VDM’s profile as an activist came in July 2023. That was when he began posting a series of viral videos documenting alleged harassment and extortion by police officers. In these videos, he discussed not only specific cases but also broader systemic issues within Nigerian law enforcement. This exposure led to an intensified focus on his activities by authorities.
