Should former President Olusegun Obasanjo write a new book, it probably will be entitled: “How Gowon saved me from Abacha.” Obasanjo is full of gratitude to his former boss, General Yakubu Gowon, himself Nigeria’s former Head of State. This follows a revelation that Gowon’s intervention probably made Abacha delay Obasanjo’s execution in 1995.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed shock after learning that General Yakubu Gowon helped save his life. Gowon, Nigeria’s former Head of State, recently revealed that he intervened with General Sani Abacha to spare Obasanjo’s life, during his imprisonment.
Speaking at the Plateau Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival in Jos, Gowon shared his story on Saturday. He said he wrote a letter to Abacha, urging him to release Obasanjo. Gowon delivered the letter through his wife, stressing the importance of mercy.
Obasanjo, who had no knowledge of the intervention, reacted the next day (Sunday). “I want to acknowledge my boss, General Yakubu Gowon. Yesterday, he made a revelation, and I have to thank you specifically for that. When I came out of prison, I had the opportunity to thank friends, inside and outside the country, who contributed to appeal and pray for my release from prison.
“And I went round the world thanking those that have been appealing and praying for my release from prison. But I did not know that you wrote a personal letter for my release until you said it yesterday; I thank you for that,” Obasanjo said.
Gowon saved from Abacha with his hidden act of mercy
Obasanjo reflected on his prison experience. He said he never knew about Gowon’s personal letter until it was revealed. “I didn’t know about your letter until yesterday. Thank you.”
Obasanjo had been arrested in 1995 by Abacha’s regime, accused of plotting a coup. His imprisonment led to global calls for his release. Yet, Gowon’s intervention remained a secret.
Gowon’s letter likely influenced Abacha’s decision to spare Obasanjo’s life. While Abacha’s regime was ruthless, soe believe Gowon’s plea may have delayed the execution. Abacha died unexpectedly in 1998.
Obasanjo said he was deeply grateful for Gowon’s act. The event in Jos was attended by notable figures, including Governor Caleb Mutfwang and former governors Jonah Jang, Joshua Dariye, and Boni Haruna.
This revelation strengthens the bond between Gowon and Obasanjo. Their relationship, rooted in mutual respect, now carries a new layer of gratitude.
Obasanjo’s story is one of survival and resilience. His time in Abacha’s prison became a defining moment in his life. But Gowon’s intervention likely changed the course of his future.
