An image representing Nigeria's former Head of State used with a story entitled: "How Gowon saved Obasanjo's life from Abacha"

Against all odds, Gowon’s intervention worked. Shortly after…things began to change. The execution was delayed and that was how Gowon saved Obasanjo’s life.

In the turbulent political climate of 1995, few moments in Nigeria’s history stand as pivotal as the arrest and conviction of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Accused of plotting a coup against then-military ruler General Sani Abacha, Obasanjo faced a death sentence. But what many don’t know is that it was another former military leader, General Yakubu Gowon, who helped save Obasanjo’s life. In an emotional reflection, Gowon recently shared the story of how he pleaded with Abacha to spare his former comrade’s life.

Obasanjo’s convicted and sentenced to death was controversial and widely criticized. Many believed the charges were politically motivated.

His supporters fought for his release, but his fate seemed sealed. His execution loomed, and hope faded. That’s when Gowon took action. He could not stay silent while his former comrade’s life hung in the balance.

How Gowon saved Obasanjo’s life with a plea for mercy

General Yakubu Gowon had been Nigeria’s head of state during the Civil War. He understood the consequences of political power. He also knew the dangers of military rule. In 1995, Gowon had already expressed concerns about Abacha’s regime.

“I wrote a letter to Abacha,” Gowon revealed. He begged Abacha to show mercy and not execute Obasanjo. He asked Abacha to remember that leadership was about doing good, not evil.

But Gowon didn’t stop there. He knew his words alone wouldn’t be enough. So, he sent his wife to deliver the letter. She traveled to Abuja in the middle of the night. She carried Gowon’s plea for mercy directly to Abacha. This was a bold and dangerous move. Abacha’s regime was notorious for punishing anyone who challenged it.

A change of heart

Against all odds, Gowon’s intervention worked. Shortly after the letter was delivered, things began to change. The execution was delayed and that was how Gowon saved Obasanjo’s life.  In June 1998, Abacha died unexpectedly. The death of Nigeria’s military dictator opened a door. Obasanjo was released from prison soon after.

Obasanjo’s release was a turning point. He was freed from the wrongful charges and prison. Within a year, he became Nigeria’s president. It was a historic moment for the country.

“I’m glad that soon after that, things changed,” Gowon said. Obasanjo’s release marked the beginning of a new era. In 1999, Obasanjo became Nigeria’s elected president, leading the country into democracy.

Unity and reflection

Years later, Gowon and Obasanjo stood side by side at a public event. They both attended the Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival in Plateau State. Their presence together symbolized unity and reconciliation.

At the event, Gowon expressed his gratitude for what had transpired. “This is something that only prayers and sincerity can do,” he said. He reflected on the power of faith and how it guided his actions.

Obasanjo also expressed his thanks to Gowon. He acknowledged that without Gowon’s intervention, his life might have ended differently. The two men shared a moment of deep reflection on their shared past.

Gowon’s actions were driven by moral courage. He knew the risks of challenging Abacha. Yet, he put his own safety aside for the sake of his fellow countryman. His letter and plea were an act of conviction.

Obasanjo’s survival and eventual rise to power became a defining moment in Nigeria’s history. It was a testament to the importance of mercy, unity, and faith. Gowon’s plea didn’t just save a life; it shaped a nation’s future.
