Akwa Ibom Police have arrested members of a banned group accused of youths military training. The group, known as the Ibom Youth Council, was proscribed by Governor Pastor Umo Eno. He ordered security agencies to shut down their activities immediately.

A joint security team, acting on reliable intelligence, raided the group’s operational base at Ikot Isighe, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. On arrival, the members fled. Operatives arrested three suspects.

Security forces also demolished the alleged headquarters of the banned group. According to the police, the group had begun procuring arms and engaging in military training. They had launched attacks on security formations and private properties.

Youths military training for violent disruption

The group had planned to stir chaos as the year ended. They aimed to disrupt peace in Akwa Ibom by launching violent activities in late 2024. Their goal was to destabilize the state into the New Year.

Experts believe the youths military training aimed at preparing for attacks on strategic locations. “We can’t allow any group to undermine the security of our state,” said a local security expert. “The arrest and demolition were necessary steps.”

The state government has reinforced its commitment to maintaining Akwa Ibom’s status as the country’s most peaceful state. “We will not tolerate any action that threatens our peace,” said a government official.

In recent weeks, security operations in Akwa Ibom have intensified. Police have been conducting regular patrols and raids across the state. The goal is to prevent crime and disrupt any plans for unrest.

The state has maintained its reputation for safety, even as other regions face challenges with insecurity. The police urged residents  to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities. “We depend on the public to help us keep our communities safe,” ASP Timfon John, police spokesperson said.

The Akwa Ibom government is urging citizens to be extra cautious, particularly during the festive season. Authorities also charged landlords to screen potential tenants carefully. “Any property used for illegal activities will be demolished,” the government warned.

The police assured residents of tight security measures in the coming months. The state’s leadership is confident that these actions will keep Akwa Ibom safe and secure.
