Authorities assure citizens of optimum security as the police uncover gun factory in Akwa Ibom. This even as the festive season approaches.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has made significant strides in fighting crime, with a major success in uncovering a gun-making factory. This discovery is part of a series of recent successful operations led by the police, according ASP Timfon John, the PPRO.
On 29th November 2024, operatives stormed a hidden factory where firearms were being illegally manufactured, she said. The factory reportedly produced guns of various types, which suspects allegedly sold to criminals across the region. The operation resulted in the arrest of one suspect, David Nse Emmanuel, while his family members, who also ran the business, managed to flee.
Weapons recovered from the gun factory, Medialord.ng gathered, included:
- Seven newly made single-barrel guns
- Five newly made double-barrel guns
- One special steel double-trigger pistol
- A broken single-barrel gun
- Several iron pipes used for gun barrels
The police are currently working to arrest the remaining suspects and trace those who purchased firearms from the factory.
Other achievements, as police uncover gun factory
The discovery of the gun factory is just one of the many successes by the Akwa Ibom Police. In recent weeks, the command also made multiple significant arrests.
On 27th November 2024, police foiled a kidnap attempt along the Ikot Ekpene/Uyo Highway. Armed assailants attempted to abduct a man, but police intervened swiftly, neutralizing one suspect and recovering an AK-47 rifle, rounds of ammunition, and charms.
On 29th November 2024, police arrested a suspected motorcycle robber, Otobong Joseph Peter. He was allegedly found in possession of a locally made pistol.
ASP John also said operatives tackled vehicle theft and armed robbery. On 25th October 2024, they arrested a suspected serial car thief, Kingsley Ernest Nelson. He was reportedly in possession of several stolen vehicles, including a Toyota Corolla and Toyota Sienna.
Further, on 12th November 2024, police arrested suspected members of a cult group involved in robbery and extortion. They recovered firearms and substances suspected to be drugs from the suspects.
Child theft foiled, suspect arrested
In another major success, the police arrested a man who had abducted five children in Mbiakpan Ikot Idim. That was on 14th November 2024. The police rescued the children and reunited them with their families.
CP Joseph Eribo, the Commissioner of Police, has expressed his Command’s iscommitted to fighting crime. He assured citizens that efforts would continue to ensure public safety.
“Akwa Ibom remains one of the safest states in Nigeria, and we are determined to keep it that way,” Eribo said.
