The adultery allegation, which led to the suspension of  a commissioner in Jigawa State, has now been found to be untrue. The court has therefore cleared him of any wrongdoing.

The Upper Shari’a Court in Kano, presided over by Ibrahim Sarki Yola, has cleared Auwal Danladi Sankara,  of an adultery allegation. The state governor recently suspended Sankara as the Commissioner for Special Duties in Jigawa State.

Nasiru Buba accused Sankara of  having an illicit affair with his wife, Tasleem Baba Nabegu.

In his ruling, Judge Sarki Yola stressed the importance of thorough investigations by law enforcement, especially in sensitive cases involving prominent individuals. He cautioned the authorities to handle such allegations  carefully to avoid unjust damage to reputations.

“Following the investigation by the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, the report shows there is no evidence to prove that there was any illicit affair between Auwal Danladi Sankara and Tasleem Baba Nabegu,” Judge Yola stated.

The judge said the complainant, Nasiru Buba, and his legal representatives failed to appear in court. They were not there to contest the police findings. This lack of opposition led to the case being struck out.

Role of the Hisbah Commission and law enforcement

The judge also highlighted the role of regulatory bodies, such as the Hisbah Commission, in ensuring fair and careful investigations. He cautioned the citizens not to tarnish the reputations of public figures based on unproven allegations.

“Since the complainant and his lawyers are not present to challenge the submission by the police, I have no choice but to strike out the case,” Yola added. The ruling effectively ended the adultery allegation case, clearing Sankara of any wrongdoing.

Adultery allegation: Sankara’s team happy with judgment

Speaking after the ruling, Auwal Sankara’s lawyer, Barrister Sadam Suleiman, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision. He emphasized that Sankara had always maintained his innocence and that the court’s judgment affirmed this position.

“We have always maintained that our client is innocent. The court has affirmed this by clearing his name based on the police investigation,” Suleiman said. The defense team was happy that the court dismissed the case.  The team held that the claimant had no evidence  to support the adultery allegation.

While the court has ended the case, it may not be over for Nasiru Buba. Rabiu Shu’aibu, the lawyer representing Tasleem Baba Nabegu, hinted that they could pursue a defamation case against him. Shu’aibu stated that they would consult with their client to decide on the next steps.

“We will discuss with our client to explore the possibility of filing a case against Nasiru Buba, as he has defamed her name,” Shu’aibu remarked.

The court ruling has brought an end to a case that attracted significant attention in Jigawa State.
